Composition of Joint Unit of Research, if relevant

The Research Group on Integrated Management of Coastal Areas is located in the Knowledge Area of Regional Geographic Analysis of the University of Cadiz. Its main characteristic, however, is the multidisciplinary nature of both its lines of work (public policy, marine sciences, sustainable tourism, geographic information systems) and the researchers who develop them. In this way, it is understandable that it is attached to three faculties, the Faculty of Marine and Environmental Sciences, the Faculty of Philosophy ad Arts, and the Faculty of Social Sciences and Communication.

Juan Manuel Barragán is Professor of Regional Geographic Analysis and lecturer at the Campus of International Excellence of the Sea (CEIMAR) in the Faculty of Marine and Environmental Sciences at the University of Cadiz. His training in geography and planning was developed in university centres in Spain and abroad: Seville, Valencia, Madrid Polytechnic, Strathclyde in Glasgow. He has been responsible for teaching in Coastal and Marine Planning and Management for more than two decades and since 2004 he has directed the Master's Degree in Integrated Coastal Zone Management at the UCA. He has participated in dozens of doctoral, master, expert and other short courses in Spanish and Latin American universities. As a result of his research he has written and published 15 books and more than 40 articles related to the management of coastal areas. He is also director of the research group Planning and Management of Coastal Areas since its foundation. His concern, both theoretical and practical, for this discipline is palpable in the content and development of the numerous communications and papers presented at congresses and scientific meetings, both national and international.

Technology Expertise

The Research Group is characterized by the development of methodologies for integrated coastal and marine management, marine spatial planning, land use planning and sustainable tourism. In all of them, the techniques of public participation and social leadership are applied in the research.
In addition, the use of geographic information systems is a fundamental technique for the development of spatial work on the territory, which is essential for the planning and management of the land and marine environment.
