Semaínein is an excellence research group of the PAIDI, formed by an interdisciplinary team whose projects and publications have gained national and international recognition (32 points) and earned several awards. Its main lines of research imply both Theoretical Linguistics (Lexical Semantics, Morphology, Syntax, Pragmatics, Language Variation, Sociolinguistics, Psycholinguistics, Text Linguistics and Discourse Analysis) and Applied Linguistics (Terminology, Neology, Phraseology, Language Teaching, Clinical Linguistics, Computational and Digital Linguistics, and Forensic Linguistics).

Professor of General Linguistics (1995), Humboldt Scholarship Holder (Heidelberg, 1991-92), Gastprofessor (Saarbrücken, 1997-2009) and Guest Professor in other universities abroad, his 188 publications in high-impact academic journals and prestigious publishers –on Semantics, Lexicology, Lexicography, Terminology, Linguistic Historiography and Language Variation– earned him some academic awards (eg. Conde de Cartagena (RAE) and UCA Research Excellence Award). Dr. Casas is the director of research group Semaínein and Institut of Applied Linguistics (ILA), has directed numerous doctoral theses, projects and contracts, and gained recognition for his quality research and transfer of knowledge.

Since its constitution in 1995 and the creation of the ILA, the researchers of the group have specialised and gained technical and methodological experience in different fields of Applied and Experimental Linguistics, such as Terminology, Lexicography, Neology, and Corpus Linguistics (Language Industry); Linguistic Consultancy and Style Correction, Language Teaching, Sociolinguistics, Language Variation and Languages for Specific Purposes (Social Communication), and Clinical Linguistics, Computational and Digital Linguistics, and Forensic Linguistics (New Technologies and Language Processing).
