Katarzyna Szlachetko is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Administrative Law. She holds a PhD in Law (2017) and is an attorney-at-law (2016). Since 2021, she has been leading the research programme “Good Light Law” at the Metropolitan Institute. She is the recipient of the Rector of the University of Gdańsk’s Second Degree Award for her doctoral dissertation The Substitute Order of the Voivode (2018). In 2021, she conducted a research project funded by the Polish National Science Centre entitled Sustainable Outdoor Lighting Policies in the City: The Case Study of Copenhagen. In 2022, she completed postgraduate studies in Spatial Planning at the Warsaw School of Economics with distinction.

Short description of research profile

Dr. Katarzyna Szlachetko focuses on public law, with particular emphasis on local government law and governance, development policy, the investment and construction process, and the legal aspects of light pollution. She is the author of several dozen scholarly publications in these fields, addressing in particular the role of law in shaping spatial development, public policies and environmental protection at the local and regional levels. Since 2021, she has been conducting her own research programme entitled “Good Light Law”, which examines the legal and administrative frameworks for shaping and implementing sustainable outdoor lighting policies and aims to develop legal tools supporting more balanced, environmentally responsible and socially sensitive approaches to outdoor lighting. In her research, she places strong emphasis on interdisciplinarity, in particular on collaboration with scholars and experts in architecture and urban planning, geography, and astronomy.
