The Centre for Tourism Research, Development and Innovation (CiTUR) is a R&D unit of the national higher education polytechnic subsystem that brings together 17 institutions (universities and polytechnics), and involves more than 200 researchers. It conducts multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary applied research as well as producing and sharing scientific knowledge in tourism.
It aims to be a leader in applied research, development and innovation and to be recognised by civil society and business for its superior ability to generate and share knowledge in tourism. CiTUR Algarve is one of the six hubs of CiTUR.
Fernando Perna is a full professor at the University of Algarve - ESGHT, School of Management, Hospitality and Tourism (Portugal), where he has been teaching since 1992. He is an integrated researcher at CiTUR – Center for Research, Development and Innovation in Tourism, having been its National Director in the triennium 2020-22. He holds a PhD in Economics in the specialty of Applied Economics from the University of Algarve and a Master’s degree in Economics and Politics of Energy and Environment from the Technical University of Lisbon. With emphasis in the field of tourism, leisure and hospitality, he has several scientific publications and coordinations/participations in national and international research projects, he is guest reviewer of scientific journals and conferences, and realized Erasmus mobility in Norway, Nepal, China, Algeria and Cape Verde. His study is particularly focused on the relations between the economy and tourism, from the perspective of regional development, sustainability, seasonality, impact of events, management of coastal areas and the blue economy, with emphasis on nautical tourism.
Tourism Economics and Management - focused on development and capitalization of tourism economics decision support systems for public policy and business planning; efficient management accounting systems; tourism contributions to the circular economy; strategic and operational marketing instruments for business and destination competitiveness.
