Short description of research profile

The Center for Advanced Studies in Management and Economics (CEFAGE) was created in 2006, with the aim of promoting high quality research in the areas of Management and Economics. Since 2009 CEFAGE is funded by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) (previous project reference: UID/ECO/04007/2013; current project reference UIDB/04007/2020).

CEFAGE is now a Research Unit that brings together some of the best researchers in Economics and Management from various institutions. It has a main office at the University of Évora and branches at the University of Algarve, University of Beira Interior, Faculty of Sciences and Technology at the New University of Lisbon and Lisbon Accounting and Business School (ISCAL).

CEFAGE-UAlg is the scientific branch at the University of Algarve. It is located at the Faculty of Economics in Campus of Gambelas and counts with 13 full members, several research collaborators and PhD students. The members of CEFAGE-UAlg have developed several research studies of conceptual, methodological and empirical nature, published in high quality journals and have supervised several Postdoctoral, PhD and Master students.

CEFAGE-UAlg has six research groups: Strategy. Entrepreneurship & Operations; Finance; Industrial, Labour & Spacial Economics; Macroeconomics, Growth  Development; Tourism; Sustainability & Performance.

The members that belong to the Strategy. Entrepreneurship & Operations group develop research related with the following topics, among others: 

  • Business strategy formulation and implementation
  • Development of performance assessment systems based on the Balanced Scorecard
  • Organizational performance assessment and management with the objective of improving the competitiveness and sustainability of organizations
  • Benchmarking of organizations and processes for best practice identification
  • Development and Implementation of multi-criteria systems for decision support
  • Analysis of the benefits of implementing ISO norms
  • Statistical analysis of data.
