Short description of research profile

The research activities of the Biological Sciences group focus on the following main areas.

1) Identification of new molecules targeting enzymes involved in neurodegenerative diseases and cancer.

2) Central and local control of reproduction in mammalian and non-mammalian vertebrates by cannabinoids, environmental pollutants and endocrine disruptors.

3) Biological effects of extracts from natural sources on cell functions and metabolism: identification of new molecules targeting human diseases.

4) Study of the mechanisms underlying cellular neuropathology of the dopaminergic system in animal models of Parkinson’s disease and synucleinopathies.

5) Nutraceutical evaluation and biological valorization of natural products extracted from vegetable sources.

6) Identification of new molecular tumor markers by the study of cellular functions regulation and their alterations in several tumors.

7) Studies on clinical-anatomical features in ancient human remains to investigate the historical presentation and evolution of diseases by means of photogrammetric analysis.

8) Study the regulation of the cell cycle, differentiation and apoptosis using as tools bacterial, external agents of natural or synthetic origin, to investigate the changes occurring at molecular and morphological level.
