Francesco Colangelo has a degree (5 years) with merit in Civil Engineering at the University of Basilicata (2002). He wrote an experimental thesis, with the partnership of Italcementi Group (Brindisi), on the construction materials made by industrial wastes. This thesis had an award by Environmental Agency of Region Basilicata (ARPAB).
He has a Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering from University of Basilicata. Even the PhD thesis, focused on innovative techniques to optimize the use of wastes materials in concrete, received an award. He has a Master of Science in Environmental Research ITC from University of Rome. He worked as lector at Universities Federico II of Naples and Basilicata where he was supervisor
for several experimental thesis.
In the 2006 he won the selection as Assistant Professor (SSD ING-IND/22 Materials Science and Technology) at Faculty of Engineering of the University of Naples Parthenope.
From 2007 he was Aggregate Professor of “Innovative Materials for Civil Engineering” and “Materials Engineering” at Faculty of Engineering of the same University. The latter course, in English language, was done with the partnership of Polytechnic of New York and was useful to have a degree recognized both in Italy and in USA. From 2011 he teaches also in Doctoral School in Civil Engineering at the Department of Engineering at the University of Naples Parthenope. From 2017 he worked as Associate Professor at the same University and from 2022 he is Full Professor and he teaches “Innovative materials for civil and environmental engineering” and “Management of Industrial risks”.
His main research fields are the recycling of wastes materials in concrete and in the geoenvironmental and civil applications, the application of Life Cycle Assessment methodology to different processes for preparation of innovative building material, the evaluation of durability of mortars and concrete, the stabilization/solidification of hazardous wastes and the synthesis of geopolymer eco-sustainable materials based on industrial waste.
The above activities are also done in co-operation with international research centres “ Centre Scientifique et Technique du Bâtiment” (Paris), “Geopolymer Institute” (Saint-Quentin – France) and “Sustainable Technology Research Centre, Kingston University” (London).
He has been and still is scientific manager of a number of research projects with public and private companies. Since 2012 he is a senior member of RILEM.
He is director of the Master Course of Specialization in Safety Engineering at the Faculty of Engineering of University of Naples Parthenope. He is director of Director of Laboratory of Environmental Material and Safety at the Department of Engineering of University of Naples Parthenope.
All the above researches are proved by more than seventy papers, mostly on international journals, and presentation to international and Italian conferences.

Short description of research profile

The main areas of research include: the development of new materials for energy applications; stabilization/solidification of hazardous industrial solid waste, soils and sediments; the preparation of concrete and geopolymer materials based on fly ash, blast furnace slag, foundry slag, slag from the incineration of municipal solid waste. Other research lines deals with the durability of the products obtained through the formation of calcium silicate and hydrated aluminum trisulphate, even in the presence of chlorides and sulphates; inerting by mechanochemical treatment of industrial waste containing asbestos and sediments.  Moreover, the reuse of products from building and construction materials and the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of the production processes of environmentally friendly building materials are investigated.
