Sport is one of the world's biggest cultural phenomena and reflects society. Knowledge of sport and society is therefore important in order to understand contemporary opportunities and challenges. A professional skipper is engaged in 16-20 weeks of uninterrupted work during the season, which requires exceptional psychological and physical effort, especially if we take into account the extremely demanding sleeping conditions in the absence of any life routine.

For the jobs of sailors in the Merchant Navy, there is also no research on physical demands, psychological stress, and the quality of sleep while performing jobs.
