Short description of research profile

Throughout my professional career, I have authored/co-authored several papers published in peer-reviewed journals/book chapters. Regarding research projects, I had the opportunity to participate in twelve sponsored research projects. The impact of the projects is represented by numerous publications, as well as several oral/poster presentations at national/international conferences.

Regarding integration into national and international research networks, I have been part of a COST network and a SOCRATES project. I am also a founding member of two societies that promote scientific knowledge (the Portuguese Association of Experimental Psychology and the Society for the Cognitive Science of Culture).

To contribute to good scientific practices, I’m membership in Editorial Boards of national/international publications and have reviewed articles for national/international journals. I have participated in international panels for the evaluation of research projects and have been involved in several boards for the awarding of scientific prizes. My contribution to good scientific practice also involves my willingness to be part of various boards for the selection/recruitment of both research fellows and career teachers.

I have also been active in organizing scientific events (joining Scientific and Organizing Committees). I have organized four methodological workshops, open to students, and to professional psychologists, to activate their research skills and improve scientific knowledge.

Technology Expertise

After completing my degree in Clinical Psychology at the Higher Institute of Applied Psychology in 1991, I Initiated my professional activity in 1992 as a PhD student at the Laboratory for Language Studies, Hospital de Santa Maria, Lisbon. There, I focused on assessing brain-damaged patients and researching the modulatory influence of formal schooling and literacy on human cognition. During this period, I collaborated on European projects related to the evaluation and rehabilitation of brain-damaged patients as well as functional neuroimaging of language. I successfully concluded my PhD in Biomedical Sciences at the Lisbon Medical Faculty in 1997. In 1995, I started collaborating with the Cognitive Neurophysiology Research Group at the Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm, where I was a Post-Doc between 1997-99 (FCT scholarship). In 2000, I joined the University of Algarve as an Assistant Professor (2000–04), progressed to Associate Professor in Neuropsychology (2004–2020), and assumed the role of Full Professor in Neuropsychology since 2020. Throughout my academic career, I actively engaged in university management roles (Director of the Department, Vice-President of the Scientific Council, President of the Scientific Council, Director of the bachelor’s degree in psychology, Director of the master’s degree in Cognitive Neuroscience and Neuropsychology), among other responsibilities. I also played a role in the establishment of Scientific Societies, notably serving as the President of the Portuguese Association of Experimental Psychology and contributing to the Society for Cultural Cognitive Science.

Regarding my scientific contributions, I founded the Cognitive Neuroscience Research Group in 2001. I have authored over 70 scientific publications in major international journals, actively participated in numerous national and international scientific projects, as both a Principal Investigator and team member, and served on editorial boards and evaluation panels.
