The researchers were driven by ‘the aim to present what is most important in the process of sharing knowledge and shaping the skills of discovering very diverse, complex and often controversial problems of the contemporary world’. Short essays about well-known historical events and precedential court judgements, used by the authors as the basis for questions about contemporary interpretation and application of law, especially in the context of hard cases, are a modern method to share knowledge of law.

The main area of ​​research for the entire research group are the following issues: direct / participatory / deliberative democracy - both in general and in relation to specific institutions, such as: national and local referendum, civic legislative initiative, civic budget, citizens' assemblies or re-call. The team also conducts research on various aspects of the judiciary.
Individual team members also conduct individual research - often in collaboration with foreign researchers - on other topics, such as:

Led by Professor Joanna Kruczalak-Jankowska, the Bankruptcy and Restructuring Research Group examines and analyses various issues related to insolvency.

Led by Professor Bartłomiej Gliniecki, the Company Law Research Group examines and analyses various companies and corporate structures  – including problems related to commercial companies under the Polish law as well as development tendencies – but also extends its research to all kinds of related issues as corporate governance or corporate finance.

Research group is focusing on tobacco control law from perspective of seaside regions. Seaside regions have their specific issues in tobacco control. Mostly they are touristic regions with political and legal tendency to loosen tobacco control regulations and its enforcement which are seen as something what may discourage tourists. These regions have also bigger crossborder movement which is associated with smuggled tobacco supply. This causes greater public health threat with the need for more comprehensive legal approach.

For several decades, the Department of Civil Law has been conducting scientific research on the fundamental and topical problems of all branches of civil law, in particular obligations, in particular civil liability, property law, family law, medical law, intellectual property law, insurance and European private law.
